Hi Raluca

I and my wife. Liz, were on the bike trip in Transylvania in the last week of May. We greatly enjoyed the trip and were very impressed by the way you and Liviu organised everything.

Thanks once again for a most enjoyable holiday.

Trip: Mountain biking in Romania through the Carpathian villages - guided tour

Hi!

We had a great time and Nicu was excellent in every respect.

It was a bit hillier than we expected and some of the off road parts were very challenging but we all survived - although one of our party (Malcolm) did fall off and crack a couple of ribs!!

Next time it will be the more gentle slopes of the Saxon Villages...

Regards

Trip: Villages of Bucovina & Maramures

Hello everyone at Romania Active,  Before too much time passes, I would like to send my thanks to you.  I had a very good trip from start to finish (well, except for the taxi drivers that tried to rip us off...).

Thanks very much for answering all of my questions and adjusting the itinerary and plans for the second week of my trip.  The hotels were well chosen, trains worked out well (I even got on the right ones going in the right direction each time!).  The highlight of the second week for me was the visit to the Libearty Bear Sanctuary.  Thanks very much for working out the driver/ride for me that morning so that I could make it.

We even had some good surprises along the way that weren't in the plan like seeing the cultural group dancing to traditional music and getting to see how palinka is made.  The hiking was wonderful and the churches and monasteries were beautiful and interesting, but the real highlights of the week are the people we met - both those who were part of the itinerary and those who stopped to talk to us - and offer us fruit!

I posted some pictures to friends and have already passed on your information to those who were intrigued about the trip.  I think for many Americans, Romania isn't really on the list of places to go, but it is now for a few more here after hearing about my trip.

Thanks again for all of the care and attention and the great memories.

Trip: Discover Maramure by bike

Hello Raluca-Maria … at last!

Our cycling holiday in Maramures … was everything we hoped it would be. Your attention to detail was excellent and we appreciated the phone-calls beforehand checking, for example, how fit we were and then slightly altering the chosen route to suit us … very thoughtful.

The Road Map was superb. Of course we went wrong a few times, but not seriously and it was always fun. We learned to read it very carefully!
The information about the various places, churches, monasteries, etc., we would see on the way (in green) was really useful and interesting. Our lack of Romanian language made this information really, really, useful!
Thank you too for highlighting our route and stops on the map given to us at the start.

The bikes were just right for the job with good off-road tyres, much needed on some of the rougher, stony tracks, which we found quite a challenge at the start, not being off-roaders ourselves, but we improved day by day and I only fell off once. I’m a horse-rider so expect the odd tumble.
Punctures … we had none, but the kit provided, patches, tools, inner-tubes and even a spare tyre was very re-assuring.

Accommodation … all but one of our overnight stays were excellent.
Th first one gave us our first taste of Maramures hospitality and it was very special. The guest house was superb, our hosts were extraordinarily kind and helpful, the  room was lovely and the food simply delicious. Nothing was too much trouble for those lovely people. The bikes were delivered to us next morning and after a few adjustments, off we went, armed with a really good picnic.

The Mocanita … oh how we enjoyed the trip on that darling little steam train, the Mocanita. No-one should miss that. The sight and sound of all that puffing and whistling will stay in my head forever. Fabulous.

Maramures is the most wonderful, rural, scenic, unspoilt area. We were there at peak-haymaking time, which was fascinating to watch. They all work so hard. We passed hundreds and hundreds of those gorgeous, pointy, little haystacks and masses of drying racks piled with lucerne and grass. The small fields were brim-full of wild flowers. The views were breathtaking, especially when the far distance was where we’d cycled from that day. The hills … steep, hot and exhausting but always with such a sense of achievement at the top and the thought of that picnic, just over the brow, in the shade of an apple tree.

I would do it again tomorrow. It was an amazing holiday.

Thank you to the two Ralucas for making it work so well for us..

Jenny xx

Trip: Discover 3 unique Romanian cities - customized tour

Many thanks for organising such a wonderful trip. Kay and I enjoyed every aspect of our week before the cycling and then the cycling week was excellent too.

Particular things we liked:

The overall shape of the trip was excellent with a good mixture of towns, villages, historical sites and countryside. You prepared our trip exactly exactly in line with what we asked for, with the Bear Sanctuary and walking as well as sightseeing. Many agents don’t listen well but you did.

The walking notes were very clear and worked out perfectly. We only had time for the short option at Balea Lake as it is a long drive to Moieciu de Sus from there. But it was a lovely walk.

We chose the shorter option the next day too as the weather looked a bit uncertain. It was gorgeous and spectacular and in fact the weather was fine, but it saved my legs for a week’s cycling! The Carpatica Lodge didn’t know about our horse and cart booking, but it all worked out fine and it was there on time.

We liked all the hotels. You had clearly chosen characterful boutique hotels for us carefully and they were all good.
Your Roadbook with details of sites to visit and restaurant recommendations and the detailed itineraries you sent during the planning and booking stages were an excellent reference and well worth it. We worked out travelling times using Google Maps, but perhaps you could have mentioned these in the Roadmap. As you said when we met, there are far more things in your Roadbook than there was time for! But that was not a problem. It just means we will have to come back.

All in all, you did a great job for us on both parts of the holiday. Many thanks to you and your colleagues.

Trip: Mountain biking in the Carpathian mountains

Many thanks for organising a great trip. We all had a fantastic time. The weather was perfect all week which always helps a lot. My favourite was cycling on the trails in the forest.

Nico was an attentive and fun guide and judged the days and routes well for our abilities. He even kindly laughed at our bad English jokes. The accommodation all worked well. Each of us had a favourite, none were disliked.

Not a criticism, just an observation, the food was mostly good, the breakfasts a bit meaty compared to our usual, but always plenty. Similarly the packed lunches were meaty and not very varied.
The schnapps and white wine was always of a very high standard, the red wine a little rustic for our palate. It is quite possible nothing very different to the local cuisine is readily available.

Thanks again for all your organisation; a wonderful experience.
