Moldavia is the Eastern region of Romania, sharing the same name and a lot of history with the neighboring country Moldova, located East of Romania. This region of Moldavia is extending from Ukraine in the North to the Black Sea in the South-East and it is limited by the Carpathian Mountains to the West. The north part of this region is called “Bucovina”, a Slav name despite Romanian being a Latin language, being a result of the incredible reach history of Bucovina. Located in a strategic commercial place (between the Baltic and the Black Sea) it attracted various peoples like German, Jewish, Hungarian, Gypsies, Ukrainian, Turkish or Polish.
The region is famous for its painted monasteries. Their architecture and their unique outside frescoes allowed the monasteries of Voronet, Humor, Moldavita, Sucevita, Putna and Dragomirna to be classified in the world heritage by UNESCO.
The beauty of these monuments is emphasized by their location in valleys which were once very isolated and wooded and where grew the villages that are now around them. In addition to these great monasteries, numerous traditions, as the egg's painting, remain here vivid and offer a special place to Bucovina in the heart of the Romanians.
