Romania - Winter holidays - 8 days

This journey in the heart of Romania will bring us in three parts of the Carpathian Mountains. The South of Transylvania, where we will stay, has always been a strategic zone for the defence of the Hungarian Empire against the Ottomans. As such, impressive citadels were built here, and represent today an inestimable patrimony. What will impress you maybe even more is the rural world in which you will be immersed. It is a diverse and surprising world due to its diverse mix of inhabitants: Romanians, Hungarians and Saxons. A truly unforgettable journey!

Program

Day 1 Reception in Bucharest Beginning of the journey in Bucharest. Private transfer in a very attractive Saxon town with nicely coloured houses.

Day 2 Saxon citadel Small trip to discover this new and remarkable environment. Warm-up walk in the forest around the town and visit of the citadel. Night in the same place as the night before. (~ 2-3 hours or more, depending on the weather).

Day 3 Immersion in the Carpathian Mountains A short transfer will take us in another mythical range of the Carpathian Mountains. For the next 2 days we will admire a limestone crest of almost 30 km. We will hike to reach a village, perched on more than 1000 meters height, which will welcome us warmly for the 2 following nights. (~3 hours)

Day 4 Traditional villages Today we go snow-shoeing in the middle of these perched villages, while following this magnificent crest (~3 hours). Depending on the weather conditions and the group level , we will extend our trip through the Zarnesti Gorges. (~5 hours).

Day 5 Bran Castle Today we leave this rural world in perfect harmony with nature to continue our adventure. Our walk will bring us to visit the charming Bran Castle. Transfer to a more isolated village, at the feet of the Bucegi Mountains. (~3.5 hours)

Day 6 Bucolic track Our programme today will bring us in a bucolic landscape. Straggling villages on hills will not let us indifferent. We will have the chance to pass near a hundred years old house that Romanian authorities want to bring in the Bucharest Village Museum! (~5 hours)

Day 7 Discovery of Bucharest We leave the mysterious Carpathian Mountains today to spend the afternoon in the Romanian capital. The time spent here will give us an idea of the restless history of Romania during the 20th century. Different architectural styles will show us the influences under which this city has lived: from the Ottoman and oriental influence to the western contemporary influences (neo-classicism and socialist architecture). A surprising mixture which will make you better understand a culture in search of recognition. Night in a charming small hotel in the city centre.

Day 8 End of the journey Transfer at the airport after the breakfast. End of the trip.
